City project manager garners recognition at global IPMA Awards
02 December 2022
The International Project Management Association (IPMA) held its annual
awards ceremony recently to celebrate outstanding project management
achievements over the past year. The City of Cape Town achieved notable
recognition in the Global Individual award category, with Mariam Kamalie from
the Spatial Planning and Environment Directorate winning second place for
Project Manager of the Year.
The IPMA Awards gives recognition to outstanding individuals, projects and organisations that have achieved exemplary results in project management. The City of Cape Town earned recognition for its innovative planning and implementation of the multipurpose environmental centre at Helderberg Nature Reserve.
In their assessment, the IPMA judges found the project manager, Mariam Kamalie, to be highly competent in the areas of project definition, strategy, compliance and finance. They acknowledged that the project overcame critical performance challenges thanks to the project manager's initiatives, and noted that the education centre has started conducting education programmes that will help to promote environmental awareness.
'We congratulate Mariam Kamalie on her excellent achievement. She has led by example and helped to showcase the City of Cape Town's innovative approach to project management as well as our commitment to providing quality educational facilities at our nature reserves that will raise awareness around the critical importance of our natural heritage,' said Alderman Eddie Andrews, the Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment.
The Helderberg Environmental Centre demonstrates green construction methods and sustainable designs. Many of the conventional materials and methods used in the construction industry have a negative impact on the environment. This includes a high embodied energy, water and waste footprint. The City decided to use this project as an opportunity to ensure that environmentally responsible material is used.
The City of Cape Town also achieved several other accolades at this year's Global IPMA awards. Visit the IPMA website for further details.
